What's the point of the age of consent crap?

This guy I know has said he's not talking to me until I'm 18. It's not like I asked him anything too bad. All I said was that I wasn't sure I was gay and maybe I should try something with him to see. He's paranoid about nothing. Why do they have those stupid laws?
